Harry Kane outlines what it will take for Spurs to close in on Liverpool and Man City at the top

Tottenham already find themselves five points behind Liverpool at the summit of the Premier League following Sunday's defeat against Newcastle United.

In a game the hosts were expected to win comfortably following the Magpies' early struggles, Spurs just couldn't create anything despite having all the ball as Steve Bruce's side remained strong at the back.

A visit to north London rivals Arsenal is next on the agenda for Tottenham and they could be even further behind the likes of Liverpool and Man City this time next week as they look to cause a shock in the title race.

Picking up points in big games always proves crucial come the end of the season whether that be in the title race or the fight for a place in the top four, and Harry Kane has explained that Spurs must do exactly that if they want to be there or thereabouts come May.

"I said the first game of the season that Liverpool played on the Friday night and City early Saturday and they set the standard with the results they got," he said.

"I said we're have to keep up with them and make sure we win, especially at home.

"It's disappointing we haven't done that with our second game, but there's still a long way to go and a lot of big games ahead of us.

"It just means we'll have to pick up points in the big games and try and improve on what we've done today."

Seen as the team most likely to run Liverpool and City close in the title race, the Spurs striker is hoping that is still the case but he is aware that it would take a stunning set of results over a sustained period to run them close.

"Hopefully. It's still going to take a lot of hard work," he added.

"As you've seen from Liverpool and City so far is that there's no letting up from them.

"I said before the start of the season that a team that can put together a good run, momentum, maybe winning two months or three months on the bounce without dropping any points is what it's going to take.

"It's obviously a disappointing start but like I said there's still a long way to go."
