Harry Kane opens up on key change he's made under Jose Mourinho - and Glenn Hoddle's influence

Harry Kane has opened up on why he chose to wear the number 10 shirt at Spurs.

The striker scored his 200th goal in his 300th appearance for the club in the 3-1 win over Ludogorets in the Europa League midweek.

The 27-year-old has scored six goals in seven Premier League games this term and 12 goals in all competitions in 13 appearances.

The England star, who has also bagged Tottenham eight assists this campaign, has been well flanked by Son Heung-min in attack, with the South Korean scoring 10 goals in 12 appearances so far.

Their partnership has flourished thanks to, in part, Kane's selflessness, and his willingness to drop deep to set up his teammates.

And that has paid off remarkably well as Spurs are the division's top scorers with 18 goals in seven games.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Kane admitted he has changed his game a little and has revealed why he does not wear the number nine shirt despite being a number nine in the traditional sense.

"I played as a number 10 my whole youth team career, even when I got into the Tottenham team I played as a 10 behind [Roberto] Soldado and [Emmanuel] Adebayor," he said.

"With the 10 shirt, Robbie Keane, Glenn Hoddle, and the history of the shirt is why I wanted that shirt.

"I have always seen myself as a mix between a 9 and a 10. That has just been more evident this year because the final product has been that little bit better."

Kane talked about how he had made tweaks to his game under Jose Mourinho.

"Yeah, maybe a little bit. Me dropping deep is something that has been in my game for a while," he said.

"I think we are probably seeing the final product a bit more and maybe the final pass, the finish at the end of it being better.

"I think talking with the gaffer when he saw that part of my game was dropping deep I think he made it clear to the wide players or the number 10 that if I do drop deep that there are runners in behind, creating space and that allows me to express my passing range."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said Kane is one of the best passers in the world after Kevin De Bruyne.

In response, Kane said: "I have always liked Jamie to be fair.

"That is a great compliment to have. I feel like it has been part of my game. If I get into those areas then I can pick people out.

"It is a great compliment and hopefully there are a few more assists left in me this season.

"I think I have eight at the moment you want to finish as high as you can on that list.

"I think the important thing is that I am still scoring goals even though I am dropping deep."

Jose Mourinho's side would reach the summit of the league if they beat West Brom on Sunday but only for a matter of hours if Leicester and Liverpool win later in the day.

But Tottenham do not have a particularly good record against the Baggies as they have won just two of their past 10 league fixtures against them (D6, L2).

West Brom won their most recent game against Spurs in May 2018 and can record back-to-back league victories against them for the first time since 1984.
