Harry Kane: Nuno explains striker’s absence for Tottenham vs Man City

Nuno Espirito Santo says Harry Kane need to build more fitness before returning for Tottenham, with the striker left out of Spurs’ Premier League opener against Manchester City.

The England captain, who wants to join City this summer, only had two training sessions with the first team following his late return from holiday.

And it was decided he was not fit enough to even take a place on the bench and did not travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Nuno said of Kane: "He needs to work [on his fitness]. He needs to keep on working until he's ready to help the team.

"He doesn't need too many sessions. He needs to be fit."

Asked whether Kane would be at the game, Nuno added: "He worked in the morning, I don't know what he's going to do [now]."

Tanguy Ndombele was also left out for Spurs, who named an unchanged side from the one that started the final friendly against Arsenal last week.

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Tanganga, Sanchez, Dier, Reguilon, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Bergwijn, Dele, Lucas Moura, Son

Subs: Doherty, Romero, Winks, Gil, Sissoko, Lo Celso, Gollini, Davies, Scarl
