Harry Kane issues emotional statement as Tottenham send England captain message

The whole of England is still recovering from Sunday night's heartbreaking Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.

The Three Lions, who were taking part in their first final in 55 years, took the lead early on in front of more than 60,000 spectators at Wembley when Luke Shaw finished smartly.

However, despite impressing for the rest of the first period, Gareth Southgate 's side could not extend their advantage and they were made to pay in the second-half.

Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci smuggled the ball past Jordan Pickford and equalised for the Azzurri in the second period and the game then went into extra time.

Neither team could find a goal in the extra 30 minutes of play, meaning the final went to a penalty shootout.

Harry Kane opened the scoring for England, with Harry Maguire making it two from two, but Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka then missed the next three spot kicks, meaning Italy were crowned champions of Europe.

Now, Kane has taken to Twitter to share his thoughts on the agonising defeat. The Tottenham striker said: "Last night hurts. It'll hurt for a long time.

"We win together, lose together and will regroup together for the World Cup. Thanks for all your support this summer."

Kane spoke to the media after the defeat on Sunday and detailed how big the next 18 months is for England.

The Spurs and England star said: “We started in the perfect way by scoring, but sometimes that gives you the mindset to drop in and hold on to that lead, and I felt that is kind of what happened to us.

“We could not quite get on the ball as we have in the other games and keep possession.

“Credit to Italy, they’re a very good side. Unfortunately we’re going to look back and think of things that we could have done better, but that’s what we’ve got to learn from.

“We’ve got a big 18 months ahead of us, we’ve got to recover well and get it out of our minds as soon as we can and focus on that.”
