Harry Kane has been told what he must do to smash Alan Shearer's Premier League goals record

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas has hinted that the Harry Kane may have to leave Tottenham to become the Premier League's top goalscorer of all-time.

Jenas made the admission following Spurs' shock UEFA Europa League exit at the hands of Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday evening.

Spurs arrived in Croatia 2-0 up from the first-leg and were strong favourites to be in the hat for Friday lunchtime's quarter-final and semi-final draws.

However, a hat-trick from dangerman Mislav Orsic sealed a 3-0 win for the home side, ensuring they won the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

Jose Mourinho's side's exit from the Europa League now means that their only hope of winning a trophy this season is the Carabao Cup, which will see see Spurs go head-to-head with City in the final next month at Wembley.

But after such a damaging defeat at the hands of Zagreb, Jenas believes Kane will have been left thinking that he needs to leave the club to take his career to the next level and earn the trophies that he deserves.

"Look there’s two points I want to make here. There’s no doubt in my mind that Harry is walking off that pitch and thinking ‘enough is enough now, that’s it. I’ve given my all to this football club and I’m not getting what I deserve back,'" Jenas told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"I think when the dust settles, there will be an element of calm and he loves that football club, and I know he loves that football club.

"But with his age and the way he’s playing now. Let’s be honest, if he goes to Manchester City, in my opinion he smashes Alan Shearer’s record."

At the time of writing, Kane, who has scored 26 goals and claimed 16 assists in all competitions this season, has scored 159 career goals in the Premier League, 101 short of Shearer's record of 260.

Whilst Jenas may have a point that Kane would most probably win more trophies at City, the England captain has not found goals hard to come by this season, suggesting that he would continue to score at a rapid rate of knots if he was to stay in north London.

City, as well as cross-city rivals Manchester United, have been heavily linked with signing Kane in recent years, but it remains to be seen how much Spurs would want for him to even consider letting go of him.
