Harry Kane fired Tottenham legacy warning as he ponders Man Utd transfer

Harry Kane is at risk of tarnishing his legacy at Tottenham if he pushes for a transfer to Manchester United this summer, according to Dimitar Berbatov.

Kane is pondering his future ahead of the summer transfer window, with his Spurs contract set to expire in June 2024. Mirror Football understands he is unlikely to sign a new deal, meaning Tottenham have a decision to make over whether to cash in on their record goalscorer or risk losing him for nothing in a year.

The 29-year-old is United’s number one transfer target as they search for a world-class centre-forward to replace Cristiano Ronaldo. Kane pushed hard to leave Spurs for Manchester City in the summer of 2021 and Berbatov, who himself left the club for United in 2008, believes he shouldn’t make the same mistake again.

“I can understand and can relate to his situation. I feel for him, but at the same time I think he is going to stay at Spurs,” Berbatov told PA. “His legacy now is so great that he cannot force himself to tarnish it – when you say Spurs, it is Harry Kane and when you say Harry Kane, it is Spurs.

“They are connected forever because he is the leading goalscorer of the team, of the country and probably is going to break Alan Shearer’s record for most goals in the Premier League as well.

“So it is down to him to know what is important for him – [for] his legacy with Spurs, which is unbelievable now. [As for] personal records, it is important also to win something before he is finished playing football. It is up to him to decide.”

HAVE YOUR SAY! Should Harry Kane leave Spurs this summer? And if so where should he go? Comment below.

Kane passed Jimmy Greaves to become Spurs’ all-time record goalscorer in February and he is currently on 210 Premier League goals – 50 behind Shearer’s all-time record. The England captain has dropped hints in recent interviews about staying and trying to win the Europa Conference League and breaking more records.

Apart from loan spells, Kane has spent his entire senior career with Spurs and there is a growing feeling that he could end up staying at least another year. Berbatov, who helped Spurs win the League Cup in 2008, would welcome that decision. He added: “At one point, Spurs are probably going to win something and produce more consistency.

“Every season they have that intent, that this is going to be the defining season, but so far, it didn’t work. At one point, I am sure it is going to work, but when is that going to be? I don’t know.”

If Kane stays at Spurs then United will have to look elsewhere for a striker. Mirror Sport recently revealed they have been looking at Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos as well as Napoli star Victor Osimhen.
