Harry Kane downs Man City as Tottenham do Arsenal title favour - 5 talking points

Tottenham handed arch rivals Arsenal a massive boost in the Premier League title race by beating Manchester City on Sunday evening.

Despite an impressive start from City, Tottenham took the lead through Harry Kane in the 15th minute. Rodri was robbed of possession on the edge of his own box by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and he played in the England ace, who did the rest by slotting the ball into the corner beyond Ederson.

City responded well to going behind and almost levelled on the stroke of half-time but Riyad Mahrez struck the bar and the ball rolled to safety. As the game wore on, Pep Guardiola's side pushed to grab an equaliser and continued to dominate possession.

But despite Spurs being down to 10 men in the latter stages after Cristian Romero was given a red card, City were unable to break through a stubborn Tottenham defence. Here are five talking points from north London.

Kane breaks Greaves' record

Having netted his 266th goal for Tottenham in their win over Fulham on January 23, Kane knew that one more strike would put him ahead of Jimmy Greaves as the club's highest-ever scorer. After missing the 3-0 success against Preston in the FA Cup last week, Kane had the opportunity to break that record against City.

He took that chance with both hands as he leapfrogged Greaves as Tottenham's best-ever goalscorer with his 267th finish in Spurs colours, over a decade after his first back in December 2011. It was a finish that summed up Kane, too, as he clinically slotted home with his opening opportunity of the game.

Few could have predicted the centre-forward would go on to become the talisman for club and country, but he shrugged off the 'one-season wonder' tag he was labelled with in his breakout 31-goal 2014/15 season to establish himself as one of the great marksmen of the 21st century.

Back in 2015, former boss Mauricio Pochettino knew Kane had something special in his locker, but surely he didn't expect him to break Greaves' record - this early anyway. He said of the striker: "There may be people who doubt him about next season, but the people that know him understand, like us, that Harry can keep the level he has shown."

De Bruyne madness

For the second successive game against Tottenham, Kevin De Bruyne was named on the bench. Guardiola explained before the game that it was a tactical decision rather than anything else, with Julian Alvarez being selected in his absence as the Spaniard chose the same attack that started the reverse fixture 17 days ago.

But it was evident that front line wasn't working as City found themselves behind heading into the hour mark. That prompted Guardiola to bring De Bruyne on for Mahrez in the 58th minute. The Belgium midfielder almost made an instant impact as he set up Alvarez from a free kick, but his effort flew inches wide.

Haaland blank

Haaland had gone through what was described as a mini-barren spell in the Premier League after the turn of the year as he failed to score against Chelsea or Manchester United. But the striker returned to form with four goals in two matches against Tottenham and Wolves.

However, Haaland was starved of any kind of service in this game and struggled throughout - similar to his performances before his strike against Spurs last month. In actual fact, the Norwegian failed to have a shot on target all game.

Foden absence explained

It seems as though question marks are raised every time Guardiola releases his City teamsheet, but there was quite a reaction to the news that Phil Foden was not even in the squad. The 22-year-old has found regular game time hard to come by of late, having not played in each of City's last three matches.

The England ace would not get any action for a fourth game in a row after he was not named in the 20-man contingent for the clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. In his pre-match interview, Guardiola revealed that Foden felt "unwell" in the hotel before the game and therefore was not included.

What it means

The win for Tottenham has moved them to within one point of fourth-place Newcastle after the Magpies drew at home to West Ham on Saturday. Spurs had dropped off the pace just after the turn of the year, having lost to Arsenal and City in back-to-back matches, but look like they have found their groove once again.

Meanwhile, City missed the chance to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal after the Gunners lost to Everton one day earlier. It is their second Premier League defeat in four matches and they still trail Mikel Arteta's men by five points despite playing a game more.
