Harry Kane damaging Tottenham reputation - Spurs fans' opinions on striker's transfer saga

It was a rollercoaster week for Tottenham and their fans which started with an apparent refusal from star man Harry Kane to return to pre-season duty and ended with a statement that left people somewhat confused.

It has been public knowledge that Kane could end his 17-year association with the north London club, though it is understood he has not registered an official transfer request.

The England captain has been frustrated at the side's inability to capture major silverware in the last few years and clearly there was a disagreement or miscommunication, despite Kane's statement that he did not refuse to train.

football.london wanted to know the opinion amongst Spurs' loyal supporters, so we asked what you thought of Kane's apparent actions and the consequences for his remaining time at Spurs.

Kane's Spurs reputation

In Kane's statement, he said: "I wouldn't do anything to jeopardise my relationship with the fans who have given me such unwavering support during my time with the club."

However, in answer to the question 'Are Harry Kane’s actions damaging his reputation as a Tottenham legend?' - 83% of responses were a simple 'Yes'.

Unfortunately for Spurs' all-time second top scorer, it seems as if his actions have had a negative impact on fan opinion, and despite being back training now - albeit in isolation - he may have some work to do in order to placate an already frustrated fan base.

Keeping a player who doesn't want to stay

Former goalkeeper Paul Robinson has likened the situation to that of Christian Eriksen and his desire to leave Spurs in the summer of 2019.

Robinson claimed: "If the manager does start putting him into squads and into the team while the situation is not resolved, I think we’ll end up in a similar situation to when Christian Eriksen was there – sitting on the bench, not playing to his full potential when called upon.

“That upset the rest of the dressing room, in all honesty.”

And Spurs fans tend to share a similar view. When presented with the question 'Should Spurs be trying to hold onto a player that does not want to be at the club?' it was a fairly unanimous verdict - 63% of participants answered no.

So where once the loss of Kane was unthinkable, perhaps his actions, comments and age are shifting opinion amongst the fan base.

Robinson certainly thinks it may be the best time to cash in.

"I think the way this has been handled has not been good for either party," he said. “I don’t think there’s a possibility that he can stay there now.”

Is now the best time to cash in on Kane? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Whatever happens in the next few weeks, Kane and Daniel Levy are certainly at an impasse. Price will clearly be the issue, with Levy reportedly not willing to accept anything less than £150million for his star man.

A thought echoed by the Spurs faithful, as 40% of participants wouldn't accept anything less than £150m and 38% of participants wouldn't accept anything less than £120m for the striker.

So, clearly, this is one of the most difficult sagas in Tottenham history that has left fans frustrated and split, and it doesn't look like it can have a good ending, even if Kane does stay.

However, with Spurs landing a great signing in Cristian Romero, and reportedly willing to spend big to land Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez, perhaps Nuno's new-look project could convince Kane to give it one last go, and there may be a happy ending in waiting after all.
