Harry Kane confident England can end long wait for major tournament glory: ‘We’ve got to have belief’

Harry Kane is confident England can end their 54-year wait for a trophy at next summer’s Euros or the World Cup in 2022.

The Three Lions have not won a major honour since 1966, when they defeated West Germany to win the World Cup on home soil.

England have only suffered heartache at tournaments since then, but captain Kane believes fans should have confidence going forward - particularly after the side reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018.

England will have two chances in as many years to end their trophy drought, with next year’s rescheduled pan-continental European Championship being followed by the World Cup in Qatar in December 2022.

And Kane is optimistic about Gareth Southgate’s side ending the country’s wait for silverware.

“I am really confident in our team. I think we have grown a lot over the last year or two, obviously on the back of a good World Cup,” he said.

“That is the aim (to win a trophy). That has always got to be the aim as a footballer - to win any competition you are in. I think we are moving in the right direction.

“Of course, we all know how long it has been since England won a trophy and it would be special to obviously do that. We also know there is a lot of hard work and a long way to go to be able to [do it].

“But for sure, we have got to have belief and have confidence. I am looking forward to a really special couple of years with the Euros in the summer and then the World Cup in 2022.

“It is a great opportunity for all of us to try and perform and try and bring some silverware back.”

England are back in action on Wednesday night when they take on Iceland in the Nations League at Wembley Stadium.

Following their defeat to Belgium on Sunday, the match is a dead-rubber as Southgate’s side cannot finish top of Group A2 and nor can they be relegated by slipping into last place.

After the game Kane will return to Tottenham, who currently sit second in the Premier League, and the striker says he is relishing working under Jose Mourinho.

“He has been great,” said Kane, who was appearing on ITV’s Good Morning Britain programme to launch this year’s Football Shirt Friday campaign to raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund.

“I have really enjoyed working with him. I am sure everyone is starting to enjoy his Instagram posts recently as well. That gives you a little taste of what he’s like.

“He’s been great for us and great for me. I am looking forward to getting to know him even more as we go on.”
