Harry Kane compared to Zidane during Man City display as Toby Alderweireld suffers injury

Here is the Tottenham Hotspur morning digest for Sunday, November 22.

Gary Neville compares Kane to Real Madrid Galactico

Gary Neville has been effusive in his praise of Harry Kane, comparing him to Zinedine Zidane.

The England international was in fine form as Tottenham recorded a memorable 2-0 win against Manchester City on Saturday evening, and Kane’s contributions did not go unnoticed.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville talked up Kane’s involvement in proceedings.

Jose Mourinho on worrying Alderweireld update, Lo Celso sub and Kane

"He’s playing brilliantly in that role, Harry Kane. I’m gonna get mocked for saying this, but there’s a little bit of Zidane in him when he gets the ball in that position with how he sort of shields it and protects it," Neville said on commentary.

"Yeah, it’s the physicality, the touch in the way he gets the ball, protects it and shields it. No-one can get near him,” he said. “Well, I couldn’t (laughs).

"Maybe that’s not the measure. He is messing with them like you wouldn’t believe. I remember a few years ago when they played at Wembley against Liverpool, Harry Kane was sensational, I think against Dejan Lovren that day, I think he got substituted.

"This is as good as I’ve seen him since then. He’s had some brilliant games, but in a top game, a hard game against Man City, he’s been spectacular."

Aldeweireld injury update

Jose Mourinho revealed after the game that Toby Alderweireld has sustained a groin injury which leaves his side short at the back.

Spurs orchestrated a masterful win against City yesterday to go top of the Premier League, but the only notable concern was the fact Alderweireld limped off in the 81st minute and was replaced by new signing Joe Rodon.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho confirmed that the Belgian’s injury was “bad” and discussed his lack of defensive options.

“It’s bad. It's a muscular injury in the adductor,” Mourinho told football.london. “The dimension of course we don't know, we have to wait, but it's a difficult injury for sure.

“In the Premier League we have three centre-backs, in the Europa League we have don't have Joe Rodon, we only have two, but that's the way it is.

“We don't have anybody to blame. He played in the international matches that the team needed to win to qualify for the final four. With us he's playing so well we decided to play him rather than rest him.

“There's nobody to blame, just to recover as soon as possible.”

Mourinho happy with Spurs ‘evolution’

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mourinho was in fine form after his side’s 2-0 victory in north London.

Speaking after his side’s win Mourinho went into detail on a variety of topics, including injury situations, his super-sub Giovani Lo Celso and if Spurs fans can start to dream about a league title.

The Portuguese was also celebrating his first anniversary as Spurs boss, and when reflecting on his first 12 months in charge Mourinho was quick to distance himself from major praise.

“The 14th last season is a fake 14th,” he said. “It's a temporary 14th. It happens in a crazy season where they had so many problems. Everything was going wrong. The situation was not good but come on, the work they did before here, the club, Mauricio, the players, the 14th was just a temporary situation.

“I'm happy with the evolution. I knew, I think I knew where I could improve the team. We worked hard, the players are very open to what we are doing.

“I couldn't be more pleased but this position can be fake. Tomorrow we can be second and you lose two matches and we could be mid-table. Incredible, incredible Premier League.”
