Harry Kane closing in on mythical English goalscoring record which has stood for almost 100 years

Harry Kane of FC Bayern Muenchen scores his team's second goal from the penalty spot during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD1 match between FC Bayern München and Chelsea FC at Football Arena Munich on September 17, 2025 in Munich, Germany. .

It was only right that Harry Kane was the man to seal Bayern Munich's extraordinary comeback against Mainz on Saturday.

In the latest highlight of a season in which the England captain has made the impossible look possible, Kane's close-range finish seven minutes from time completed an incredible 4-3 turnaround triumph for the Bundesliga champions, who had trailed 3-0 at half-time.

It was a 53rd domestic goal of the campaign for the former Tottenham Hotspur striker, who is set to line up for Bayern against holders Paris Saint-Germain tonight in the first leg of a mouth-watering Champions League semi-final.

Kane will hope tonight's clash at the Parc des Princes is the next step on the road to the treble for Bayern, who have already secured the Bundesliga title and face VFB Stuttgart in the DFB Pokal final on May 23.

The Bavarians have either six or seven games remaining this season in all competitions, depending on whether they reach the Champions League final, giving Kane the chance to break an incredible English goalscoring record that has stood for almost a century.

Dixie Dean's name has gone down in English football folklore thanks to his exploits for Everton in the 1927/28 season, when he scored an astonishing 63 goals in all competitions.

That remains a record by an Englishman playing for a top-flight club - but it could finally be broken almost 100 years later.

Kane has already become just the second Englishman in history to pass 50 goals in one campaign for a top-division side and he is now 10 behind Dean's total.

It is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that the 32-year-old bridges the gap in the final few weeks of the season, whether Bayern reach the Champions League final or not.

Vincent Kompany's side end the Bundesliga campaign with three very inviting fixtures, with their next two games against the sides currently in the bottom two, Heidenheim and Wolfsburg, and a finale at home to FC Koln, who are 14th as things stand.

Kane will sense an opportunity to add to his tally in those three games, while you would also back him to deliver in the Champions League and DFB Pokal final, having managed 19 goals across the two competitions this term.

In a season of incredible records, beating Dean's total might just be the most impressive of the lot.

The Everton legend would still hold the record for the most league goals in an English top-flight campaign, scoring 60 in that 1927/28 season to fire the Toffees to the title. Even for Kane, that might be a bridge too far.
