Harry Kane being ‘held like a prisoner at Tottenham’, says Wayne Rooney amid Manchester United links

Wayne Rooney says Harry Kane is "being held as a prisoner" by Tottenham amid ongoing speculation over the striker's future.

Kane is in the final 12 months of a six-year contract signed in 2018, and has been the subject of two rejected bids from Bayern Munich this summer. The latest was worth around £70million plus add-ons and a third is expected.

The striker, who turns 30 years old next week, has been offered a new contract by Spurs, which would reportedly significantly increase his £200,000-a-week wages, but he has no desire to sign during the transfer window as he assesses his options.

Kane will not push for a Tottenham exit, though is open to moving. Manchester United explored a deal for Kane earlier in the window, but soon ended their interest with Spurs ruling out a sale, especially to a Premier League rival.

Rooney would love to see Kane at his former club, but feels Spurs have made any exit very difficult for the England captain.

"Harry Kane would be the ideal player, for me, to go and join Manchester United," Rooney, who is currently manager at DC United and will tonight take charge of the MLS All-Star XI against Arsenal, told The Athletic.

"It looks like he's being held as a prisoner at Tottenham! It looks very difficult for him to get out of there.

"If Manchester United have Harry Kane, then that gives their chances of going to win, and compete, a lot easier. But where that happens, remains to be seen."
