Harry Kane and Declan Rice leap to defence of Manchester United's Harry Maguire

England captain Harry Kane and midfielder Declan Rice have leapt to the defence of Manchester United's Harry Maguire after he was sent off against Denmark.

The United skipper picked up two yellow cards in the opening 30 minutes, with England then going on to lose 1-0 after a Christian Eriksen penalty.

That has increased the scrutiny upon Maguire, who attracted criticism following United's 6-1 defeat to Tottenham prior to the international break.

However, he has retained the support of England boss Gareth Southgate and two of his international teammates have also issued positive messages.

“There were a couple of challenges today that he would love to have back and probably not make," Kane told Sky Sports.

"It’s all part of the learning curve, still part of the experience at international level. Of course, he will be disappointed for the boys, but he’ll bounce back.

"He’s had a great three or four years now at a top level. For him, it’s just about keep working hard, keep your head down. Football, you go through ups and downs in your career, it’s about how you come through that.”

Rice had similar comments to make about Maguire, as he said: “Since he came in 10 days ago he’s been fantastic. He’s been amazing with me and he’s someone that I love to play behind me because he’s good on the ball. He plays little passes into you and he’s always talking.

“Anyone can get a red card – that’s unfortunate. Maguire is a great player and he’s been a fantastic servant for England so far so long may that continue for him.”

Maguire returned to Manchester United's training complex this morning ahead of the Premier League clash against Newcastle United this weekend.
