Harry is ‘pretending’ no rift with William in scripted speech, body language expert says

Prince Harry's speech in tribute to his late mother Diana might have looked like relations were good with his brother William.

But a body language expert says the Duke of Sussex delivered the speech with tell-tale signs of his being "deceptive" and downplaying the rift between the brothers.

Expert Judi James analysed Harry's speech about The Diana Award ahead of what would have been the Princess of Wales's 60th birthday next month.

She claims that while Harry appeared to "pretend" there was no rift with his brother over his recent cricitisms of the royal family, there were signs that revealed the contrary, according to The Sun.

Harry is in the UK to attend the unveiling of a memorial statue to Princess Diana with the royal family in Kensington Gardens on Thursday.

Relations between the brothers are said to be strained after Harry criticised his family for not supporting him and his wife Meghan Markle during abuse by the UK media.

In the speech, Harry said: "Later this week my brother and I are recognising what would have been our mum's 60th birthday, and she will be so proud of you all for living an authentic life, with purpose and with compassion for others."

Speaking to Fabulous, Ms James said: "It could sound like the most natural thing in the world for a son to name-drop his brother when talking about his mother’s 60th birthday but for Harry and William nothing about their current relationship is casual or easy-going.

She said every little decision in the scripted address would have been carefully planned.

She highlighted Harry's use of "inclusive" phrases such as "my brother and I" and "out mum's 60th birthday".

She likened this to the brothers being photographed walking together at the funeral for their grandfather, Prince Philip, in April.

Ms James said there were "glimpses of the old Harry" in the video speech including his "cheeky grin" and reaching out his hands.

She said these words and gestures make him look like a man keen to repair their relationship or who is not suffering a rift.

Studying his behaviour as he spoke, Judi adds: "Does his emotional state change as he mentions William? There is a display of casualness as he tilts his head to one side, raises his eyebrows and throws his extended hands out as though wanting to shrug off any idea of tension.

"His blink rate increases though, suggesting a small burst of adrenalin that would hint the moment isn’t as casual as he’s trying to make it look and when he brings his hands back together he appears to be touching his wedding ring, which can be a self-comfort ritual and reminder of his wife and her support."

The Diana Award was named after the late Princess and honours young people aged nine to 25 for their social action or humanitarian work.
