Harry and Meghan's safety 'concerns' and public response could have been key in not attending Coronation

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle were reportedly "concerned" over the Duchess of Sussex's safety if she attended the historical crowning of King Charles at the Coronation next month.

It comes following the news last week after months of speculations that Prince Harry will be attending the landmark event at Westminster Abbey on May 6 alone, whilst his wife stays in their California family home with their children, Archie and Lilibet.

Meghan will not be attending the ceremony, but instead remain in the ex-working royals US home with her daughter Princess Lilibet and son Prince Archie, whose fourth birthday lands on the same day as the historic event, with the children reportedly not being invited as they are "too young."

Royal historian Tessa Dunlop has now revealed that the couple were concerned about the public's potential reaction to Meghan, given that it would be difficult to predict following months of controversy surrounding the couple and a growing family rift.

"An insider tells me that they were a bit concerned about her security and the response [from the public]," she told US Weekly. "They can’t control [what] the public would’ve given her — which would paint Britain in a very bad light too."

The author believes that Harry may be affected by his wife's absence, saying: "Clearly he does lean on her very heavily. I think clearly, they bonded. They both had painful childhoods [and] took solace in each other’s respective narratives. And he’s coming alone."

The comments come following reports that Harry is expected to dash off following the crowning, and not stay for the weekend of celebrations, as he is suspected to do everything in his power to make it back to the US following the 11am ceremony for his son's fourth birthday.

Sources close to the Duke also said he has no plans to visit any of the charities he is attached to during his brief visit back on UK soil next month. But Harry told family members he is planning to return to the UK in the summer.

A royal source told the Mirror: “After much back and forth, Harry said that he would be returning for the King’s Coronation but it will only be a fleeting visit. Organisers have been told Harry won’t be attending the concert with the rest of the Royal Family, which is a great shame as it will be such a spectacular event."

Buckingham Palace previously confirmed his attendance in a statement, saying: "Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that the Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on 6th May. The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet."

Earlier this week, we reported how Harry and Meghan featured in a very awkward-looking image of the Royal family pictured alongside each other as the official souvenir programme, which costs £20, was published.

The 84-page programme showcases a full-page photo of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex alongside Charles, Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children - George, Charlotte and Louis.

Further details also emerged about the celebrations, with the eve of the coronation set to be marked by a glittering Buckingham Palace reception attended by foreign royalty.
