Harry and Meghan's New York trip was 'huge two fingers up' to royal family, says expert

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's whirlwind tour of New York City was a "huge two fingers up" to the royal family, an expert has claimed.

The couple made a series of appearances around the Big Apple last week and met with political figures, including the New York mayor Bill de Blasio and the US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

They also visited children at a school in Harlem, went to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and appeared at the Global Citizen Live event in Central Park, where they called for vaccine equity when it comes to the Covid-19 vaccine.

It marked Harry and Meghan's first public appearances since they quit as senior royals and moved from the UK to California as well as Meghan's first appearance in public since giving birth to daughter Lilibet.

And according to royal expert and author Duncan Larcombe, the trip could be a sign of things to come from Meghan and Harry.

He told Closer magazine : "Their stepping-out last week will no doubt be the first of many similar appearances and visits. Harry and Meghan are setting a precedent for their new line of work, and what they have decided they will be.

"They essentially did a royal visit, like they used to in the UK – just on their own terms and in their own way. So it seems they have quit life in the UK to do exactly what they did here over in the States. Their visit to the memorial last week makes them the first two ‘royals’ – if they can still be considered that – to pay their respects at the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

“There will no doubt be a lot of meetings at the Palace and talks over how they are going to approach Harry and Meghan’s plans. This visit was a huge two fingers up to the royal family and shows the royal feud is far from over.”

Meanwhile, since the couple stepped down as senior royals early last year and moved to the US, Meghan has not returned to the UK to visit.

There has been speculation that the Sussexes could make a return to the UK to visit at Christmas or possibly to have Lilibet christened.

There has also been talk that they could come to the UK next year for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June.

But speaking on the Royally US podcast, royal expert and author Robert Jobson suggested: "I’m not sure Meghan will ever come to Britain again, she’s not popular here now.

“The idea of her standing next to the Queen, doting on the Queen when you’ve got a book coming out in which you’re going to spill more dirty linen in public does seem a little hypocritical."
