'Harry and Meghan have their own perception of reality - as will the Firm'

My friend has fallen out with her family over the Covid-19 vaccine.

Her elderly Dad is refusing a jab because her brother told him it would alter his DNA.

“It isn’t TRUE” she told them, firing off fact-checked articles.

But her father prefers his son’s perception of reality, and the row is tearing them apart.

Harry and Meghan’s own perception of reality will just as surely rupture their relationship with the royal family.

By telling the world “their truth” in such explosive style they may force The Firm to abandon that “never complain, never explain” mantra and tell theirs.

And when families take sides in he-said-she-said slanging matches there is precious little chance of restoring loving relations.

“Speaking your truth” became a popular mantra after Oprah Winfrey’s 2018 Golden Globes speech on the #MeToo movement.

People who feel unsupported or victimised use it to mean “sharing your experiences”.

But, in a world of alternative facts and fake news the notion that truth can ever be subjective offends me.

And, while millions of families are battling the realities of a deadly pandemic, the timing of the millionaire Sussex’s truth telling does too.

“What people believe prevails over the truth,” wrote ancient Greek playwright Sophocles.

Well, Harry and Meghan believe that, from the outset of their relationship, they were unsupported, and victimised.

Harry has always believed that his mother was driven to her death after being abandoned by the monarchy.

And, when pregnant Meghan told him she felt suicidal he believed that history was repeating itself.

That is the Sussexes’ perception of reality, the Firm will have their own.

But, truth be told, I’m already fed up with the whole sorry slanging match.
