Harry and Meghan Gave Netflix What It Wanted, Says Royal Expert

Despite the criticism surrounding the limited content released under their Netflix deal, it seems Harry and Meghan have delivered exactly what the streaming giant was hoping for. According to royal expert Jennie Bond, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex didn’t need to produce a mountain of content – they just needed to share their inside story about royal life, and that’s precisely what Netflix wanted.

Speaking to The Mirror, Jennie explained that the streaming giant’s real interest was in the personal account of Harry and Meghan’s time as senior royals, something they had already explored through their series and documentaries. “It’s quite obvious that Netflix got involved with them because they wanted the inside story of their royal life. And they got it,” she said.

Harry and Meghan signed their multi-million-dollar Netflix deal back in 2020, after stepping down from their royal duties and relocating to the US. Since then, they’ve produced some content, but not as much as fans may have expected. According to Bond, Netflix might not have been too concerned with quantity, but rather with the exclusive royal details they’ve shared.

“It’s true that they haven’t managed to produce much content since then, or at least content that has proved particularly popular,” Bond said. Despite this, the royal stories that Harry and Meghan did share seem to have satisfied the main objective of their deal.

As for whether their Netflix deal will be renewed this year, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos didn’t provide a clear answer. “I don’t want to comment on anyone’s renewals,” he said. Speaking to Variety, he added, “In general, the ones that we’ve had are bespoke and rationalized around output.”

Sarandos went on to explain Netflix’s approach to such deals, calling them “show-verall” deals, where they outline what they will do together over a set period. “We package it in a deal and work together over the next five years,” he explained, leaving open the possibility for further projects, but without offering any guarantees.

While the couple may not have produced as much content as initially expected, their royal stories appear to have made a significant impact, and it seems Netflix has no regrets about their partnership so far.
