Harry and Meghan called out over 'inconsistency' in relinquishing royal Sussex titles

Harry and Meghan have been called out on why they were still using their royal titles despite claiming their were willing to lose them.

The couple made the revelation they were happy to relinquish their titles after quitting the royal family.

The claim is one of several made in their explosive Netflix series, the final three parts of which dropped on Thursday, as they opened up on the days leading up to, and after, their shock exit from the Firm.

In the penultimate episode, Harry tells producers he discussed with King Charles, then Prince of Wales, on needing "breathing space" and their openness to dropping the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles in breaking away from the institution.

They also rebutted claims of 'blindsiding' Queen Elizabeth over the decision, claiming they were in regular discussions with Charles.

Explaining their decision, Harry said: “My father said: ‘Can you put it in writing?’ I said I would rather not because of what had happened last time. He said he couldn't do anything unless it was put in writing. I put it in emails.”

Harry sent messages to his father on January 1, 2 and 3 in 2020 as they tried to reach a resolution.

“In one of those I said that if it didn't work out we would be willing to relinquish our Sussex titles if need be," Harry said.

"That was the plan. We thought it would be good to give ourselves some breathing space, but we were also really passionate about continuing our work throughout the Commonwealth supporting the Queen.”

But the couple have been slammed for a 'lack of consistency' over keeping their titles.

Mirror Royal Editor Russell Myers was among the commentators to question the discrepancy.

Speaking on the Pod Save the King podcast, Russell said: “Why are they still using them? Again, it's another inconsistency. Give them up!

"Why are you still trading on this family that you are trashing? It is not your birth right to use [the titles] — use ‘ Prince Harry ’. It's not your birth right to be trading on these titles.”

It follows numerous calls from commentators for the couple to be stripped of their titles completely.

Picking up on Kate's CBeebies bedtime story reading she recently did for the BBC, Russell added: “You don't get Kate reading a story on this bedtime thing that she did for the BBC saying: ‘Hello, I'm the Duchess of Cambridge,’ and I just don't think that is the appeal, whereas it is for Meghan.”

“I wonder why they're so keen to have it,” he continued, talking about the Sussex titles. “Is it because the association with the Royal Family is the only thing they've got? And they've got to keep spinning this yarn?

"But the very fact that they've admitted that they were willing to get rid of them — give them up, you’d get a lot more respect from everyone if you did it.”

The couple were given their Sussex titles by the late-Queen on their wedding day in May 2018, and have continued to use them despite their shock exit from the royal family less than two years into their marriage.
