Harrowing video sees Russians shoot Ukrainian civilian who had his hands up

Upsetting drone footage from Ukraine appears to show a man being shot dead by Russian soldiers after he got out of his car with his hands up.

It is believed the civilian was killed in front of a woman and child who were still in the car before they were later led away to a wooded area at the side of the road.

It is not known what happened to them.

The drone footage was obtained by German state broadcaster ZDF.

ZDF said it spoke to the Ukrainian operator of the drone, a volunteer who said he had been tasked with observing Russian positions on the E40 expressway, close to the capital Kyiv on Monday, March 7.

The footage shows a Russian tank parked near a petrol station and cars can been seen turning around once their desperate drivers spot the invading forces.

A silver hatchback comes in to view, the driver quickly U-turns but is then seen getting out of his car with his hands up.

Almost immediately he appears to be gunned down, falling to the floor and laying slumped at the front of his car.

People thought to be Russian soldiers, who were wearing white bands around their arms, can be seen then rushing to the car, grabbing the man and dragging his body towards the ditch at the side of the road.

ZDF say the drone operator told them he watched the soldiers then torch the car.

The German broadcaster attempted to verify the authenticity of the drone images by tracking down the drone operator.

They found him in a a basement in the Ukrainian capital, where he showed them his equipment and spoke to them about what he had seen.

Yesterday the Mirror reported that Volodymyr Zelensky has encouraged Russian soldiers to surrender, asking them why they should sacrifice their lives.

In the message the Ukrainian president said: “You won’t take anything from Ukraine. You will take lives. But we will take your lives too.

"We offer you choice: if you surrender, we will treat you as people should be treated. With dignity. Not like your army has treated you."

Refugees in Poland (Getty Images)

More than three million people have fled Ukraine in the past three weeks, according to the International Organisation for Migration.

Since the war began 73,000 children have become refugees on average each day - a figure which underlines the enormous hardship triggered by Vladimir Putin's decision to send his troops into Ukraine.

Big-hearted Brits have overwhelmed the Government’s Ukrainian refugee website as they opened the doors to their homes to strangers.

Some 43,000 Brits had signed up by Monday night to welcome people fleeing the war, just hours after the Government launched the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
