Harrow unexplained death: Man arrested near scene released after police find he was not carrying machete

A man arrested near the scene of an "unexplained" death has been released without charge after police found he did not have a machete.

It comes after a man in his forties died on Wednesday afternoon. He was found with an injury in Harrow that was first thought to be a stab or slash wound.

Scotland Yard said they arrested a male nearby on suspicion of murder after officers were told he had been seen running from the scene in Northolt Road in possession of a machete.

But the force said in an updated on Thursday night that he did not have a weapon and has been released without charge.

It comes after witnesses told of their battle to save the man, who was found collapsed in a pool of blood after asking to use the bathroom in a shop.

Shop worker Selva Niththy told the Standard: “He came and asked to use the toilet, then he was in there for half an hour and was not coming out. I went there to check on him and he was sat on the commode unconscious.

“There was blood everywhere. I called the ambulance and the police.”

The Metropolitan Police said the death is being treated as "unexplained" but detectives do not think anyone else was involved.

The man who died has not been formally identified, a post-mortem examination is yet to take place and police are working to inform his next of kin.
