Harrison Bryant gains weight to help block, cites J.J. Watt as reason

The Cleveland Browns have an interesting set of skill position players including at the tight end spot. While Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry get all the attention at wide receiver, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt garner respect as running backs and the offensive line is considered one of, if not the, best in the league, the tight ends are rarely highlighted.

That doesn’t mean they are not important. In Kevin Stefanski’s offense, the tight end is very valuable. They help the team in the run blocking scheme while being able to also catch passes from Baker Mayfield. As we covered previously, the tight ends have a chance to step up in 2021 including second-year man Harrison Bryant.

Today, Bryant shared with the media that he added weight this offseason but calling it “good weight” for himself:

Bryant noted that blocking J.J. Watt last year opened his eyes to this need for more weight:

This experience happened last year when Watt was with the Houston Texans but Bryant could once again see Watt, now with the Arizona Cardinals, in 2021. It is important that Bryant keeps his speed and quickness for the passing game despite the added weight. He also needs to be light on his feet, while still strong, to face J.J.’s brother, T.J. Watt, twice a year.

With Cleveland opening preseason this Saturday, we will see the heavier Bryant in action and see how it helps him.
