Harrington street tenant describes anti-social behaviour near accommodation

A resident who secured housing on Harrington Street has described the anti-social behaviour he witnessed while living there for two years.

The tenant, who wished to remain anonymous, had to vacate a property on Harrington Street on Wednesday due to an eviction notice on the premises. A fatal stabbing took place nearby last month while the man was a tenant at the property.

The Harrington Street tenant said anti-social conditions in the area long pre-dated the shocking incident. He made approximately 130 calls to Kevin Street Garda station over the course of two years.

The tenant, who became homeless at the age of 21, recalled the first day he moved in to the premises. He immediately had concerns about his safety living there.

He told Dublin Live: "I was told beforehand it was a great place and that I could be accommodated via homeless HAP. It ended up not being an environment you could live in or have a child in."

The tenant is currently residing in a hotel after Wednesday's eviction. He said that around four or five residents decided to stick around despite the eviction date.

He wishes to highlight the unsuitable conditions endured by people facing homelessness. He said that the unsafe living environment on Harrington Street was particularly distressing for already vulnerable residents.

He added: "The government is putting people who don’t use drugs in residences they know aren't safe. I can only imagine how it feels for those with mental health conditions or addictions going into these places."

Tenants at the property first received eviction notices back in late 2022. The tenant is currently waiting for a response on his housing situation from Dublin City Council.

Dublin City Council said: "The facility in question is not in use by the DRHE as Emergency Accommodation. Anyone at risk of experiencing homelessness is advised to contact their Local Authority for advice and support at the earliest possible stage."

The tenant's landlord has been contacted for comment.
