Harold the wombat survives being shot 26 times 'from head to toe'

A wombat has been left fighting for his life after he was shot 26 times and left to die.

The animal was found on the side of a road in southeastern Australia on Tuesday.

He was then transported to a specialist sanctuary in the Adelaide hills where he is receiving emergency care.

Staff at the Wombat Awareness Organisation later named him Harold.

X-rays revealed that Harold's body was riddled with pellets "from head to toe", the group wrote in a Facebook statement.

However, they said, "his greatest threat is heat and dehydration".

Harold has now been placed on fluids, antibiotics and pain relief, "but has a long way to go," they said.

"The next few days are critical but we have everything crossed for this incredibly brave, resilient boy."

In an update, the group said the furry critter was "far from being out of the woods" but was beginning to show signs of recovery.

"He showed enthusiasm for his food today," they wrote. "It is a really positive sign. Aside from this, he is still deeply resting and recovering."

"Please keep him in your thoughts, I know he feels everyone's love," they added.

"Come on baby, you've got this."
