Harold Reid dead at 80 as Statler Brothers singer dies from kidney failure

Statler Brothers singer Harold Reid has died at the age of 80.

The singing legend died after a long battle with kidney failure.

Harold died in his native home turf in Staunton, Virginia, according to his nephew Debo Reid.

His family, friends and his legion of fans have been mourning his death since the news was made public on Saturday.

The Statler Brothers band has broken the news of his death on their website.

The post read: "He had bravely endured a long battle with kidney failure. He is and will always be loved by his family, friends and millions of fans.

"His singing, his songwriting and his comedy made generations happy. He has taken a piece of our hearts with him."

The Statler Brothers was made up of Harold and his brother Don Reid as well as friends Lew DeWitt and Phil Basley.

They started out on the big stage when they were singing backup for Johnny Cash in 1964.

But the band were originally formed in 1955 and performed locally.

Their humble beginnings saw them flourish into the Grammy-award winning band.

The group made history when they become part of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

They will be remembered especially for their successful hits include Flowers on the Wall and Bed of Rose’s.
