Harold Prince dead: Broadway director and producer Hal dies aged 91

Harold Prince has died at the age of 91.

The director and producer, who worked on Broadway productions for most of his life, has passed away.

Hal, as he was best known, had won 21 Tony Awards for his work in the New York theatre industry.

These include eight for directing and eight for producing the year's Best Musical, as well as three special awards.

He was adopted as a child by stockbroker Milton A Prince and his wife Blanche Stern, and was raised in New York City before serving in the US Army in Germany shortly after World War II.

His career in theatre began when he took a job as an assistant stage manager to the director George Abbott, and soon after won his first Tony in 1955 for co-producing The Pajama Game.

Hal's other theatrical achievements include the hugely popular Cabaret, which launched in 1966, as well as Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures and Sweeney Todd.

Hal's production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical The Phantom of the Opera became the longest-running show in Broadway history when it debuted in 1988.

He leaves behind his wife Judy Chaplin and their children Daisy Prince and actor son Alexander Chaplin.
