Harland & Wolff crane marks Belfast Blitz 'Fire Raid' on 80th anniversary

One of Belfast's iconic Harland & Wolff cranes marked the anniversary of the deadly 'Fire Raid' on the city during the Blitz.

On May 4, 1941, air raid sirens could be heard across Belfast just before midnight as the city was warned about roughly 200 Luftwaffe planes coming its way carrying over 100,000 high explosive bombs and incendiaries.

Around 150 people died as a result of the German bombing and a further 157 sustained injuries.

The main focus on the bombing was on the shipyards, as opposed to residential areas, but still large areas of East Belfast were engulfed in flames along with the city centre.

The H&W shipyards were reported to have lost two thirds of their premises during the attack and aircraft production stopped for three months at Shorts.

Speaking on Tuesday, East Belfast DUP councillor George Dorrian said that it was important to remember those who were killed and injured during events such as the Fire Raid, which impacted generations of families in the city.

He said: "Tonight we are marking the 80th anniversary of the Fire Raid on Belfast, a raid in which many were killed and tens of thousands left homeless.

"It's important that we mark these occasions, to remember those who were killed and understand the impacts which have lasted for generations. Sometimes we don't appreciate the history around us and this is an opportunity to do so.

"It's very fitting that Harland & Wolffand the Connswater Greenway have agreed to mark the occasion this evening and demonstrate the resilience of the people of Belfast."
