Harland and Wolff Welders pay tribute to club president George Anderson

Harland and Wolff Welders have paid tribute to club president George Anderson who has died.

Mr Anderson passed away on Thursday at the Ulster Hospital.

The Welders said the former club player, captain and committee member would be "sorely missed".

In a tribute posted on the club's website, it read: "It is with deep regret we announce the passing of our Club President, George Anderson. George, pictured here with the Newtownards Factory League Trophy, the first trophy H&W Welders ever won a year after its formation in 1965.

"George was a former player, captain, committee member and the current president.

"George still followed the team on a Saturday up until a few weeks ago could be seen holding court in the committee room before home games and at half time.

"He will be sorely missed by all at his beloved Welders and we tender deepest sympathy to his family circle at this sad time."

Championship club Dundela also paid tribute on social media.

The Duns said: "Dundela FC are saddened to learn of the passing of H&W Welders President George Anderson.

"We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Anderson family circle and all at the Welders at this sad time."
