Harland and Wolff Welders name Gary Smyth as their new manager

Gary Smyth has returned for a second spell as manager of Harland and Wolff Welders.

The Tillysburn club announced the 49-year-old as their new boss on Thursday night.

It follows the departures of former management team Colin McIlwaine and George O’Boyle earlier this week.

The Welders said in a statement: "We are delighted to announce the appointment of Gary Smyth as Manager of Harland and Wolff Welders.

"Gary was introduced to the squad this evening at their training session by Club Chairman Thomas Flynn.

"Having managed 'the Welders' previously, winning the coveted Steel and Sons Trophy in 2015 and finishing runners up in our highest league position to date, Gary has been tasked to ensure we progress and see out the remainder of the season, consolidating our position in the Bluefin Sport Championship One."

Smyth left the Welders in the summer of 2018 to take up a coaching role at Glentoran.

The former Irish League defender went on to succeed Ronnie McFall as manager of the Oval club before his exit last season.

The Welders currently lie ninth in the Bluefin Sport Championship.
