Harland and Wolff shipyard horn sounds in touching tribute to NHS workers

This was the touching moment the shipyard horn at the infamous Harland and Wolff cranes rang out across Belfast for the first time in 20 years.

In tribute to the incredible frontline workers battling Coronavirus in healthcare settings across the country, the siren, known for being the loudest in the city rang out in what Harland and Wolff described as a 'siren of solidarity'.

A Harland and Wolff spokesperson said: “We simply want to share our gratitude to all workers in the NHS and other critical services across Northern Ireland, the wider UK and globally, as we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them in these unprecedented times.

"The word ‘hero’ is often overused and overdone, but that is the best and most fitting description of our nurses, doctors and everyone – and we mean everyone – currently working and volunteering in the health service and all other critical services.

"The sounding of the Harland and Wolff horn is, with all things in consideration, a very small gesture. However, we feel that it will serve as a siren of solidarity, hope and tenacity for Belfast, Northern Ireland and the UK as a whole.”

Elsewhere across the country, people once again came out of their homes to applaud the NHS and frontline workers helping battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

Hospital staff at Craigavon Area Hospital stood in front of the building as a piper played in a show of solidarity and appreciation to those battling against Coronavirus.

At the new NHS memorial in Newtownards, local residents and NHS worker also came out to pay tribute to their fellow frontline workers.
