Harland and Wolff apprenticeship scheme reopens

Harland and Wolff has reopened its apprenticeship scheme for the first time in more than a decade.

Once one of the world’s most revered engineering apprenticeships, the reopening of the Harland and Wolff scheme will restore confidence in the yard which fell into administration in 2019 before being bought by Infrastrata.

Infrastrata has since bought others shipyards across the UK including Appledore in Devon and Methil and Arnish, both in Scotland.

The latest apprenticeship scheme will run across all four sites with the first intake arriving on site this September, Kelly O’Rourke, Group Director of Human Resources, said.

“I am very excited to be launching our first Harland & Wolff multi-site apprenticeship scheme which will be a key aspect of our development into the future,” she said. “This scheme uniquely offers apprenticeships across all four Harland & Wolff sites and the opportunity to build a career in a number of industry areas. Our apprentices will work alongside our highly experienced workforce, transferring valuable skills to the next generation.

“We are aiming to recruit from local communities, as well as those from a wide range of backgrounds and talents as we seek to develop a diverse workforce.”

The company said it is looking for “team players who are motivated with good communication and practical skills” with five GCSE/Standard Grades/Nationals or equivalent including Maths, English, Technical, Craft.

Applications will close at 5pm 21 May 2021.

The shipyard announced earlier this month it won a wind energy contract in Scotland.

Although the eight wind turbine jacket foundations for Saipem Limited will principally be manufactured at the company’s Methil site in Fife – creating 290 direct and in-direct jobs - it said there is a chance the work could be spread across its locations in Belfast, Arnish on the isle of Lewis and Appledore in Devon.
