Hariyali Teej Vrat Rules and Fasting Rituals

Nirjala Vrat: This is the most rigorous form of fasting, in which devotees abstain from both food and water from sunrise until the puja and vrat katha are completed.

Phalahar Vrat: A comparatively easier form of fasting that allows devotees to have fruits, milk and water during the day if they cannot observe a strict waterless fast.

Why Is Hariyali Teej Celebrated?

In Hindu tradition, Hariyali Teej is linked to the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to popular belief, Maa Parvati performed intense penance and observed fasting for 108 years to demonstrate her devotion and attain Lord Shiva as her husband.

  • Symbol of marital bond: The festival commemorates the union of Shiva and Parvati and is seen as a celebration of love, devotion and marital harmony.
  • Vrat and prayers: Married women traditionally observe the Hariyali Teej vrat and pray for the well-being, happiness and prosperity of their families.
  • Significance of green: Celebrated during Shravan, Hariyali Teej coincides with the monsoon when greenery covers the landscape. This gives the colour green special importance during the festival.
  • Traditional celebrations: Women often dress in green outfits, wear green bangles, apply mehendi, sing traditional songs and enjoy swings as part of the festivities.
