Harehills residents 'worried and scared' as woman's body found yards away from their homes

Leeds residents are “worried and scared” after a woman’s body was found yards away from their homes in the bushes by an Asda supermarket.

West Yorkshire Police were called to Kimberley Road, just off Harehills Lane, at 3.19pm yesterday (June 24). Crime scene investigators have set up forensic tents and a scene guard has been in place there ever since.

The circumstance of the woman’s death is currently being treated as “unexplained”. Married couple Marek and Karolina Kwasniewski, who live opposite the scene, spoke of how “terrible” and “scary” the situation was.

They’ve lived there for seven years and say nothing like it has ever happened on their street before, to their knowledge. Marek, a vehicle banksman, said: “It is terrible, it’s not every day that something like this happens, is it? It’s something that we’ve worried about. My wife is pregnant and that makes her worry more.

“As far as we know, nothing like this has happened on the street before. It’s the first time. It’s really scary, stuff like this shouldn’t be happening. I mean, finding a dead body in the bushes by the supermarket!”

NHS worker Anita, who has lived on the street for four years, spoke of how shocked she was to find the large police presence when coming home from work yesterday. She’s worried she may know the late woman.

Anita said: “It’s scary, I came home from work yesterday and the police had sealed everything off. There were vans and plain clothes detectives knocking on people’s doors.

“I live here on my own, I have to watch it all and it’s not nice. It’s like a typical day in Harehills though, there’s always horrible things happening in Harehills. It’s not a very nice place to live. There’s lots of street drinking, violence. For a woman knowing that a woman’s body has been found and nobody’s telling you nothing, it’s not very nice.

“I don’t have a clue what’s happened, all I know is that there’s a dead body. I don’t know if someone’s been murdered, knocked over or overdosed. I’m worried I might know the person, I know a girl who hangs round here who’s not doing very well.”

Another resident, Anna Golton, 58, said: “It’s terrible, it’s scary, because I just moved in here in January. I moved here from Yeadon which is a nice area. I’ve heard about the stabbings and shootings around here. I think it’s disgusting, it’s scary, it’s frightening. The area is getting worse.

“It’s shocking, it really is. I hope the police get into the nitty gritty of it all. It is a pity there aren’t any cameras there by the bushes.”

Anyone who witnessed anything in the area, or who has any information that could help officers, should call Leeds District CID on 101, quoting reference 13220340197.
