Hardgate Primary sisters compile special book of memories during coronavirus lockdown

Two Hardgate Primary pupils have compiled a special lockdown memory book.

Sisters Lucie and Annie Barbour asked every child and member of staff to send them the favourite things they liked to do during lockdown and put it together to form a memory book, as well as gathering key dates and facts from the period.

The girls then delivered the books to families and staff on their bikes – while following social distancing rules.

Nine-year-old Lucie said: “We were missing our friends and were wondering how they were all getting on and what everyone was doing at home.

“We asked our teacher if we could write to everyone and make a book of all our memories and what we were all doing at home.

“We were so excited when every pupil and all our teachers and dinner ladies at the school replied – we loved reading their stories and seeing their pictures.

“Our dad and mum said we could print everyone a copy and we tried to deliver as many on our walks and bike rides as we could.”

Eight-year-old Annie added: “As this is a time that will be remembered for years to come, we also thought the boys and girls that go to Hardgate in the future might be interested in what it was like for children during lockdown.

“It was quite stressful putting it together but we are really pleased with it now.”

Proud mum Sara said: “This started off as a fun way for the girls to hear from friends and it grew arms and legs.

“They worked very hard on it together and while it wasn’t without a few stressful moments, I think it taught them lots of important skills and lessons.

“They were so pleased that everyone embraced it and hopefully it’ll be an interesting and fun document that future pupils at Hardgate can refer to when learning about this unprecedented time in our lives.

“We are very proud of both of their efforts.”

Acting head teacher Victoria Hastie was also proud of the girls’ efforts.

She said: “History is being created as we speak and a book like this will be passed down generations to give them some kind of idea of what it was like living through the lockdown.

“I was fortunate enough to join the Hardgate school family as acting head teacher only four weeks before lockdown.

“I am so proud of all the children, families and staff within my partnership and how they are coping and I felt that this super effort from the Barbour family needed to be acknowledged.

“I would personally like to thank Lucie and Annie for creating this book which I will treasure but I am sure I speak for Lucie and Annie in saying it wouldn’t have been possible without all of your superb contributions.

“So thank you one and all.”
