Hardgate and Springholm Primary pupils clean up Brighouse Bay beach

Pupils from Hardgate and Springholm spent time cleaning up part of Brighouse Bay last Monday morning.

The trip was part of the children’s plastic pollution topic and was organised by Hardgate Primary teacher Tracy Martin and parent council chairman Lucie Stewart.

The council provided bags, SEPA and Solway Firth Partnership provided litter pickers and bag hoops.

Mrs Martin said: “The children did a fantastic job, picking up around 70kg of plastic, fishing waste and litter, collected in 17 bags including larger items of builder type bags, large rope and plastic containers.

“It was bitterly cold but the children enjoyed the experience and were shocked at just how much plastic pollution there was.

"Some of the children are now even planning some litter-picks in their own time.”
