'Hard-working' carer sits at roadside with sign pleading for job

A "hard-working" man is hopeful of finding work after sitting at the roadside with sign pleading for job.

Adrian Gunston, from Crewe, has been sitting at the side of Clayton Road, a major road in Newcastle, with a homemade sign as he looks for work.

And Adrian, who celebrated his 53rd birthday on Sunday, says he is hopeful now of being offered some work.

He told Cheshire Live : “I’ve got one or two offers in the pipeline, one or two sales jobs.

“I’m not very good on a computer but there could be one or two jobs leafleting.”

Adrian is a carer for his wife, Andrea, who is disabled and he said his Carer’s Allowance doesn’t really cover the bills.

He plays keyboard and in the past used his musical skills to supplement his income by playing at local pubs and venues in Crewe. But that has dried up with the onset of Covid-19.

“Last year I was at a pub in Crewe from May to August,” he said. “But obviously at the moment it’s difficult.”

He has been looking for work for a while and says he just needs a few hours part-time to help him get by.

Adrian’s sign reads: “Please take me on – any sales work. I’m reliable, hard-working and want to succeed. Can start ASAP. Thanks.”

He has a car so could travel for work in Cheshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford or Newcastle.

This isn’t the first time Adrian has used his initiative and taken to the streets with a homemade sign to advertise himself for hire.

In 2011 he featured in the Crewe Chronicle with his sign in the town centre.

“I’ve done it quite a lot, on and off, and it’s got me a bit of work,” said Adrian.

“It’s been successful before so I thought I’d do it again.”

Anyone who can offer Adrian some work is asked to call him on 07535 953369.
