Hard-up Dundee families to receive £160 Christmas finance boost from today

Thousands of Dundonians in receipt of family hardship payments from the Scottish Government will receive their final payment of the year starting from today.

The city council says it has assured locals who are eligible for the Scottish Child Payment Bridging Payment that they will receive the financial boost before Christmas.

The payment, funded by the Scottish Government, combines Covid-19 hardship payments and the Family Pandemic Payment into a lump sum of £160 per child, paid quarterly.

It is equivalent to receiving £10 per week per child in additional income support - currently only available more regularly to parents of children under six until the Scottish Child Payment is extended to families with under-16s next year.

Families who are eligible for the payment will also continue to receive free school meals during the holiday period.

Councillor Willie Sawers, Dundee City Council’s finance spokesperson, said: “This support will go far in helping families given the many financial pressures they may be facing at this difficult time.

"The payment will no doubt help to make a real difference for the over 5000 qualifying children in Dundee whose family will receive the sum."

The Scottish Child Payment Bridging Payment is open to any family in receipt of free school meals with children over the age of six.

It covers families on Income Support, Universal Credit, Job Seekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit or if they are in receipt of support as asylum seekers.
