Hard Knocks: Jon Gruden tells players to ‘end somebody’s dreams’

The Oakland Raiders shared a preview of the upcoming season of HBO’s Hard Knocks, which will chronicle the Raiders’ journey through training camp ahead of the 2019 season, ahead of the debut episode on August 6th.

In the clip, coach Jon Gruden outlined to a group of players what type of mindset they need to carry into the season, and asked the Raiders to “end somebody’s dream.”

“Everybody right now has dreams, don’t they, guys? I said it to the rookies. Everybody in the NFL, ‘I have a dream of making it in the NFL. I got a dream of winning the Super Bowl. I got a dream of being in the Pro Bowl.’

I’m really not into dreams anymore, OK? I’m into nightmares. You guys with me on that? You’ve got to end somebody’s dream. You gotta take their job. You gotta take their heart. You guys clear about this NFL now?

We’re not trying to go to the Peach Bowl. We’re not trying to go to the Gator Bowl. Or the Bluebonnet Bowl. We’re trying to go to the Super Bowl. OK? And to do that, you gotta really try to end somebody’s dreams. Are you clear on that, Ferrell? OK? I mean that now, so get into that.”

Gruden’s players probably didn’t get his reference to the Bluebonnet Bowl, which hasn’t been played since 1986, 11 years before Clelin Ferrell was born.
