Hard-hit Ethiopian farmers battle locust invasion

Hard-hit Ethiopian farmers battle locust invasion

Ethiopia’s worst locust invasion in 25 years has devastated the country’s farmland, threatening food supplies and the livelihoods of millions of people, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

The insects damaged about 200,000 hectares (500,000 acres) of land since January, as the country struggles with food insecurity amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A single square-kilometre swarm of locusts can eat as much food in a day as 35,000 people.
