'Hard bargaining on fish needed from PM who let industry down with Brexit deal'

Boris Johnson sold our fishing industry down the river with his post-Brexit deal.

He also lacks the tact and skills to stand up for the national interest while defusing the escalating row with the French.

Individual clashes weren’t unknown when Britain was in the European Union yet this dispute is broader and more dangerous.

President Emmanuel Macron, who enjoys grandstanding almost as much as Johnson and faces a difficult election race in spring, must also cool it.

He should cease detaining British trawlers, drop threatened trade bans and cutting off Jersey’s electricity supply.

We need hard bargaining to reach a settlement. Johnson let down the fishing industry. He now owes them a sustainable solution.

HRT triumph

Women in England saving up to £205 a year in prescription charges for HRT treatment is another great victory courtesy of battling Labour MP Carolyn Harris.

Forcing the Tory Government to back down, bringing costs in England closer to Wales and Scotland, came a few years after the Swansea East MP shamed the Conservatives into abolishing official fees for children’s funerals.

England’s women will only have to pay once for a 12-month supply, though Health Minister Maria Caulfield churlishly resisted Harris’ attempt to axe HRT charges completely.

But this triumph doesn’t just save women money. It recognises they shouldn’t be paying for vital NHS treatment.

We look forward to prescriptions for everybody being free in Tory England, as they are in Labour Wales and SNP Scotland.

Britain’s pride

The stars will shine in London tonight at a glitzy ceremony to celebrate the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards 2021.

These household names aren’t often overshadowed but the real heroes will be ordinary people once again being honoured for extraordinary achievements.
