Happy Yorkshire Day 2019! History and how to celebrate

It's time to show some Yorkshire pride.

Yorkshire Day 2019 has finally arrived, held on August 1 every year to celebrate the culture of the wonderful county of Yorkshire.

The first Yorkshire Day was celebrated in 1975 in Beverly to protest against the local government re-organisation of 1974 under the Local Government Act (1972).

The day also commemorates the Battle of Minden between Britain-Hanover and French forces in 1759, along with the emancipation of British Empire slaves in 1834, for which Yorkshire MP William Wilberforce fought a tireless campaign for.

So sit back, relax, and embrace some Yorkshire culture.

But how do Yorkshire folk celebrate the day?

How do you celebrate Yorkshire Day?

(Yorkshire tea)

This year, Yorkshire Day is being hosted by Whitby and events are being planned across the town, with the ventral event being the Civic Celebration; a gathering of Lord Mayors, mayors, civic leaders, and other leading local figures in celebration.

Other ways to participate include eating Yorkshire puddings or black puddings, partaking in Yorkshire arts such as watching an episode of soap opera Emmerdale or classic sitcom The Last of the Summer Wine.

Alternatively, get your whippets out and flat caps on and show your regional pride.

Drink some Yorkshire tea, down Yorkshire beer, roam the Yorkshire moors, read a book by the Bronte sisters and get Yorkshired *not a word*.

It's an excuse to get the Sean Bean posters out whilst playing the Arctic Monkeys or the Kaiser Chiefs too.

Yorkshire Day 2019 is held on August 1, 2019, in Whitby, Yorkshire.
