Happy Valley viewers' surprising reaction to villain Tommy as gripping BBC drama reaches climax

Happy Valley viewers admitted feeling "sorry" for the show's villain Tommy Lee Royce as the hit drama reached its conclusion.

The BBC drama came to a thrilling end on Sunday night with a final showdown between Sarah Lancashire's Catherine Cawood and evil Tommy - who she blamed for her daughter's death by suicide. Psychopathic Tommy is described by BBC producers as a "dangerous human being" with a "pathological mistrust of everyone" - but that didn't stop fans feeling sorry for him.

Sparklyyy1 said on Twitter: "Is it wrong watching Tommy crying like that makes me want to give him a hug? If he had a better mum and a better childhood, maybe he would not have turned out to be a wrong 'n."

Ben Ramsdale said: "Me rooting for Tommy Lee Royce throughout this episode and then remembering he's a completely deranged serial killer."

Benjiwalsh_x said: "Why do I feel sorry for Tommy?" while Salfordmanda hailed the talents of show writer Sally Wainwright and actor James Norton, saying: "Why am I feeling compassion for Tommy superb acting and writing that's why."

Joanna Thornton said: "Christ when you're genuinely crying because Tommy Lee Royce, narcissist and psychopath, is crying."

Naiyer Qureshi said: "I wonder why Tommy turned out this way - a series of his early life would be great. There's a tiny decent human still lingering in those tears."

But DebraJones_1D disagreed, saying: "How are people feeling sorry for Tommy, he's a rapist."

And LukeTwomey_ added: "You almost feel sorry for Tommy and then you remember he literally just killed three people so."
