Happy Valley season 3 confirmed for BBC One with Sarah Lancashire returning

BBC One has confirmed that the third and final series of Happy Valley is in development.

This will come as a pleasant surprise to fans, as the latest episodes of the smash hit drama aired almost half a decade ago.

It has been confirmed that Sarah Lancashire will return to star as Sergeant Catherine Cawood.

This final series was written by the original creator Sally Wainwright.

Speaking about the show, Wainwright said: "I'm delighted to find myself back in the world of Catherine Cawood and her family and colleagues for the final instalment of the Happy Valley trilogy. It's been wonderful to see the lasting impact this series has had on audiences all over the world.

"I'm thrilled that Sarah, James and Siobhan are back on board for what I hope will be the best season yet, and thrilled once again to be working with the wonderful team at Lookout Point, the BBC and our new colleagues at AMC."

Lancashire said it was "time to let the dog see the rabbit", while Norton admitted it was a "wonderful and daunting privilege" to return to his role.

This series starts with Catherine discovering the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir. This sparks a chain of events that unwittingly leads her straight back to Tommy Lee Royce.

As well as trying to stop a serial killer, Catherine is juggling the demands of her 16-year-old grandson Ryan, and facing the never-ending problem of drugs in the valley as she gets closer to retirement.

When will the third series of Happy Valley series be available to watch?

The release date hasn't been confirmed but since the BBC has announced that filming for this series will begin in 2022, it will be a while before it hits our screens.

Which actors will return to Happy Valley alongside Sarah Lancashire?

Sarah Lancashire has played Sergeant Catherine Cawood, the protagonist of the BAFTA-winning crime drama, since it began.

Lancashire is a British actress who is known for her role in Happy Valley, which she has held since 2014. She has also been in Yesterday (2019) and Clocking Off (2000).

Her husband is Peter Salmon, who she's been married to since August 22, 2001, and has one child with.

James Norton will also return to his role of murderer and sex offender Tommy Lee Royce, while Siobhan Finneran comes back to be Catherine's sister, Clare Cartwright.

James Norton recently played John Brooke in Greta Gerwig's movie adaptation of Little Women, while Siobhan Finneran has most recently featured in the BBC Two comedy series, Alma's Not Normal.

Finneran became a recognisable face for her role in the comedy series Benidorm, but is most known for her roles in dramas such as Downtown Abbey.

How many episodes are there and where can I watch it?

This final series will contain six episodes. It will air on BBC One and be available to stream on BBC's iPlayer.

While you wait, the first two series of Happy Valley are available to watch in full on BBC iPlayer now.
