Happy Valley's Sarah Lancashire spoke up to 'change' ending of final episode

Sarah Lancashire is reported to have spoke up to 'change' the end of Happy Valley, after being convinced that the conclusion of the hit drama 'didn't feel right.'

Nearly nine years after it made its much heralded debut on the BBC, the hit Sally Wainwright will draw to what looks set to be a gripping conclusion this weekend, after a third and final series that has given fans many twists and turns so far. It has already been confirmed that Happy Valley's final episode will be 10 minutes longer than the all others, with the BBC pushing back the news on Sunday, February 5 to the later time of 10.10pm.

Last Sunday's penultimate episode set things up very nicely for a thrilling finale. After breaking free from court, Tommy Lee Royce, the arch nemesis of Sarah's no nonsense Catherine Cawood, made contact with son Ryan via an online game, unbeknown to grandmother Catherine and the rest of his family.

Tommy asked Ryan, his son from raping Catherine's late daughter Becky, to runaway with him to Marbella, with the teen telling his villainous dad that he'd 'think about it', as viewers became sure that Ryan will betray Tommy in the finale.

It's been widely reported that a number of different endings have been filmed for Happy Valley, with star Amit Shah saying the cast don't even know how things will pan out.

And now James Norton, who plays Tommy, has said leading lady Sarah requested a change to how it all wraps up. Speaking to The Big Issue, he said: "We had one version of the end that didn’t feel quite right, Sally knew it and Sarah spoke up and said it doesn’t feel right. A month later, we got a new script and it all fell into place. It was magical."

On Happy Valley ending, James added: "Selfishly, I love Happy Valley, creatively and commercially. So I’m slightly conflicted because personally, I would love to keep going. But deep down I’m with Sally. This is the right call. So I hope the ending doesn’t disappoint."
