Happy Valley on BBC One: When it starts, what time it is on, cast and where you have seen them before

Happy Valley is returning to our screens for its third and final series, six years since the drama was last on our screens. Written by Sally Wainwright, the popular drama will see Sarah Lancashire return once more as Sergeant Catherine Cawood.

Fans have been patiently waiting for a new series of the show, which last came out in spring 2016. Six new episodes, each an hour long, will air on BBC One this January.

In series three, Catherine discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, which sets off a chain of events and leads her to Tommy Lee Royce, the man who raped her daughter. Her grandson Ryan is now sixteen and is starting to question what kind of relationship he should have with his father.

The Bafta-award winning show is set in a gritty Yorkshire valley and it was filmed in the Calder Valley, with scenes being shot in Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge, Huddersfield, Meltham and Leighley.

The new series of Happy Valley starts on BBC One this January (BBC)

When does Happy Valley start?

The first episode will be shown on Sunday, January 1, on BBC One at 9pm and on BBC iPlayer. Happy Valley won’t be released as a box set, but will instead be shown weekly.

Who will star in Happy Valley?

James Norton will be back playing the role of Tommy Lee Royce (BBC)

Sarah Lancashire will reprise her role as Sergeant Catherine Cawood. The Oldham-born actress is known for long-running role as Raquel in Coronation Street, appearing in dramas the Last Tango in Halifax and The Accident and the films Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Yesterday.

James Norton returns as Tommy Lee Royce, who is in prison after the crimes he committed in season one. Viewers will recognise him from McMafia, Grantchester, War and Peace, and the 2019 adaptation of Little Women.

Catherine’s grandson Ryan (BBC)

Rhys Connah plays Catherine’s grandson Ryan, while Siobhan Finneran plays Catherine’s sister Clare Cartwright. Siobhan is known for her role as Janice Garvey in the comedy Benidorm, playing a maid in Downton Abbey and starring in Harlan Coben’s The Stranger on Netflix.

There will be some new cast editions for the final series including Amit Shah (The Other One, The Long Call), Mollie Winnard (All Creatures Great and Small, Four Lives) and Mark Stanley (The Girl Before, White House Farm).
