Happy Valley fans spot clue Alison will play key role in Tommy and Catherine's showdown

Happy Valley fans have worked out how one background character could be heavily involved during the show's final scenes.

Viewers predict Alison Garrs will play an integral part in Catherine Cawood and Tommy Lee Royce's possible deadly battle on Sunday night, thanks to spotting a telling sign in the credits for the final episode of the crime drama.

Ahead of the BBC series coming to an end this weekend, a teaser for the conclusion has been released - with a the 22-second preview promising some tense and dramatic scenes.

The short clip shows copper Catherine (Sarah Lancashire) declaring Tommy ( James Norton ) is "gonna to be angry and he’s gonna be even more desperate and dangerous" as the police continue their hunt for the killer.

Alison (Susan Lynch) is nowhere to be seen in the teaser, but fans are convinced the supporting character will be appearing on our screens on Sunday night.

Taking to Reddit ahead of the big finale, one fan shared their theory about Alison with fellow Happy Valley enthusiastics.

"I've said all along that I think she’s [Alison] going to play an integral in the finale," forum user u/M1ke2345 began with.

Alison served time behind bars for murdering her son in series two of Happy Valley (BBC)

"She’s a big star and to have her back as a background character is not why she’s there.

"She wasn’t listed in last night's episode. BUT… She is listed as being on next week’s finale.

"There’s going to be some kind of payback, in terms of her sacrificing herself to save Catherine I think, kind of in the same way that Catherine saved her by not judging her and just holding her on the doorstep after Alison had shot her son, and making herself available for Alison when she came out of prison."

Alison played a major part in the second series of the crime drama, thanks to the former farmer killing her son Daryl Garrs (Robert Emms) after discovering he had been murdering sex workers.

She was handed a prison sentence and served her time, before appearing on our screens once again as a free woman in series three - working as a mechanic after training while behind bars and was fixing up Catherine’s truck.

Alison's motor skills may have a deeper meaning when it comes to how Happy Valley will conclude, according to some fans.

"Not me lying in bed searching 'Double de-clutching' cos I’m so sure Alison’s clutch has a vital role to play in the “Revenge is a dish best served cold” dénouement #HappyValley," one fan mused on Twitter after the penultimate episode of the crime drama.

Another mused: "I’m convinced Alison will be involved in the finale of #HappyValley. She is definitely going to be on Catherine’s side and probably run Tommy over with the Land Rover."

"My #HappyValley theory is that Alison Garrs (Susan Lynch) will play a massive part. No way is she just working on Catherine’s Defender. I think she’ll actually turn out to BE Catherine’s defender and save her life! She believes she owes Catherine and she’ll save her life," a third predicted.

*The final episode of Happy Valley airs this Sunday at 9pm on BBC One
