Happy New Year from everyone at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail

Happy New Year from everyone at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail.

Let's hope 2020 brings you all lots of treasured moments and lasting memories.

Last year certainly had plenty of high and lows with a host of shocks and surprises also thrown in. The fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was one of the biggest world events that made the headlines along with the tragic death of Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala in a plane crash in the English Channel.

In politics, the UK lost one Tory Prime Minister in the shape of Theresa May because of her failure to deal with Brexit only for another to cement his place in Downing Street in an unusual December General Election thanks in large part to Boris Johnson's promise to finally get Brexit done.

The election also showed the divided political nature of the UK with the pro-EU SNP holding sway in Scotland. With Brexit on course to be delivered this month and demands for IndyRef2 increasing, 2020 is bound to be another eventful year in the political realm.

Scotland mounted a sensational comeback at Twickenham to earn a draw after trailing by 31 points (AFP/Getty Images)

In the sporting field, Scotland's rugby team provided the most thrilling highlight of 2019. The comeback at Twickenham against England to record a remarkable 38-38 draw in an incredible Calcutta Cup encounter will live long in the memory. Scotland's woman's football team also did us proud as they reached a World Cup Final for the first time.

Unfortunately, we also lost a few legends along the way in 2019 with the likes of Billy McNeill, Eric Caldow, Stevie Chalmers, Fernando Ricksen and Hugh McIlvanney passing away in the world of sport while renowned chef Andrew Fairlie, as well as author and artist Alasdair Gray, will also be sadly missed.

But New Year's Day is all about looking forward rather than back and as always you can keep up to date with all the latest news and sport today by logging on to dailyrecord.co.uk as the Daily Record first foots another year.

Who knows what's in store in 2020 but you can rest assured the Daily Record and Sunday Mail will keep you abreast of the big events at home and abroad as well as bringing you all the latest Scottish news and sport.
