Happy Mondays star Bez's dad dies hours after Shaun Ryder's brother found dead

Happy Mondays star Bez's dad has died just hours after Shaun Ryder's brother was tragically found dead.

Bassist Paul, 58, passed away just before the band was due to play the Kubix Festival in Sunderland.

Devastatingly, in what was a double heartbreak for the band while Bez, also 58, was comforting Shaun, 59, he got the news that his father was seriously ill.

After rushing to Blackpool to be with his family, the star's father sadly passed away in the early hours of July 16.

His funeral took place a week before Paul’s, but Bez's friends paid tribute to his dad as Paul was laid to rest.

A family source said: "The band has had two really big hits in the past few weeks. First goes Paul, then Bez had to deal with the death of his father," reports MailOnline.

“But Bez is really private when it comes to his parents and family and he didn’t want to make a big public announcement or make a big show of it."

Paul's funeral service was held at St Charles Church in Swinton, Manchester, on 4 August.

Famous mourners included Stone Roses singer Ian Brown, 59, and Peter Hook, 66, bassist and co-founder of New Order and Joy Division.

The service featured Paul's bandmate Rowetta singing Bridge Over Troubled Water before prayers and then David Bowie's Starman as the recessional music.

The family insider added: “The funeral was rightly a big deal, and a lot of people there knew about Bez’s father, so it really was a double goodbye in some ways."

They added that glasses were also raised to both Paul and Bez's dad at the wake.

A week ago the Happy Mondays released a charity EP in Paul's (nicknamed Horse) honour and brother Shaun said: "This special release of Tart Tart showcases the unique musical talent of our brother Paul Ryder who passed from this world ... we will all miss you Horse...he brought the funk and the rock n roll to Happy Mondays ... love you long time R kid."

The band - which originally was made up of Paul, Shaun, Gary Whelan on drums, Paul Davis on keyboard and Mark ‘Bez’ Day on guitar - wrote in a Facebook post: “The Ryder family and Happy Mondays band members are deeply saddened and shocked to say that Paul Ryder passed away this morning.

“A true pioneer and legend. He will be forever missed."
