Happy Mondays star Bez once nearly died of a bicarbonate of soda overdose

Happy Mondays star Bez once nearly died of a bicarbonate of soda overdose.

The 61-year-old dancer chowed down on some baking soda to try to sort out a terrible stomach ache, after he had consumed some dodgy sardines.

But he felt even worse after chugging so much bicarbonate of soda his insides erupted like a "volcano".

According to The Sun newspaper, he says on next week's episode of Sky show Never Mind The Buzzcocks: "I nearly had the strangest rock ’n’ roll death ever - a bicarbonate of soda overdose.

"I had these sardines and got this really bad stomach ache after.

"I heard that bicarbonate of soda sorts you right out.

"Then I spent the next 24 hours like ... remember those volcanos, you put stuff in and stuff just came out of it? Like that.

"You know what I found out later? They clean drains out with this s***!"

But this isn't the only time Bez has come close to meeting his maker.

In 2023, Bez told how he was lucky to be alive after a motorcycle crash in Magaluf, Majorca, left him with broken bones and damaged ligaments.

Speaking four months after the smash, he told the Daily Star Sunday newspaper: "We were off-road in the mountains near Magaluf - it was literally on the way home. I lost the front end and had a really bad accident.

"I broke bones. I broke my foot and did all my ligaments in.

"I’m just recovered. It still hurts a bit and it’s not quite right, but it’s getting more and more easier."

Bez also feared death when he contracted COVID-19 in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to the publication in 2021, he said at the time: "I had Covid a week before they made the announcement.

"I couldn’t breathe and I couldn't tell if it was my heart or my lungs.

"I got to the hospital and I said, 'I’ve been having this heart attack for three days' and they plugged me into the machines and everything and I had a swollen heart and a virus.

"I really seriously thought I was going to die."
