Happy memories of Troon hotel doyenne

The much-loved matriarch of a Troon hotel family has died.

Mina Watt bought the South Beach Hotel 38 years ago and was an inspirational figure within the business.

Mrs Watt, who lived in South Beach, died on Friday at the age of 89.

Her son Stuart told the Post: “She had a great life and would do anything for anyone. People have been full of lovely stories about her.

”She turned round a failing hotel to what it is today.

“Mum was a real force of nature and she made the South Beach what it is today.”

Her funeral will take place on Wednesday, May 29, at the Old Parish Church, Troon, before a cremation at 1.30pm.

Mrs Watt was well known for running a tight ship and would not suffer any nonsense.

But that was combined with an endearing nature of giving or offering help where it was needed.

Stuart now runs the popular 32-bed South Beach with his daughter Vicki and son Jonny.

Mrs Watt was universally known as just that. Nobody ever used her christian name.

In fact, only her first name is planned to be put on the funeral order of service.

In a joint message the family said: “She was an incredible, inspiring lady to many and leaves a strong legacy behind.

“She will be sorely missed by all of us at the South Beach and the many people who had the pleasure of her company over the years.”

Vast numbers of well-wishers left messages on the hotel’s Facebook page, recalling the difference she made in their lives.
